Hints
This section is dedicated to getting players through the game without spoiling everything for them outright. If you need a step-by-step solution for the puzzle that has you stumped, please refer to the Solution / Points List. Clicking on a question will reveal a hint. If there's more than one clue available, there will be an icon behind the clue to indicate more available information on that particular topic. Click the icon behind the clue to reveal additional clues.
Arrival in Kolyma

The first phase of the game starts as Graham's ship sets sail back to Daventry.
So, now what? Where am I supposed to start?
  • At this point, it would be wise to explore Kolyma's countryside and get familiar with the layout of the realm. The path that starts east of the docks leads straight to the town, but straying from the path is not a bad idea. There are some "sub-quests" that can be done in this chapter, but you can do them later as well.(although you might miss a point or two if you do a certain sub-quest later) Some of these sub-quests must be done in order to complete the quest for the Growth Gem while others are completely optional.
There are lots of places where I can't enter. Either the door's locked, there's a trap that kills me or I get lost.
  • Certain areas are not accessible to you at the beginning of the game. You'll get to explore them eventually. Ignore them for now.
Will I ever get to explore the northern or eastern part of town?
  • Nope. There's nothing interesting there.
The librarian refuses to help me.
  • She'll let you know why not. You're not a member and new members are not accepted right now. Maybe one of the existing members will be able to help you. More hints
    • Keep querying the librarian to find out who they are. More hints
      • See if you can meet with the old man next door.
Can I get into the house next to the library?
  • No. Take a look at the door to see why not. Fortunately (for you that is), the inhabitant only gained membership status recently. Very, very recently. There's more to the door than just the announcement.
I found something under there. But how do I get it?
  • Use a flat object to reach under the door. Any object that's flat and sharp will do the trick.
The librarian won't accept my card.
  • That's because it isn't signed.
The librarian doesn't want me to use the quill on her desk.
  • She doesn't need to know you're using it. More hints
    • Watch her closely and wait for the right moment.
Is there any advantage to membership?
  • The librarian will let you read some interesting literature depending on how far you are in the game. Visiting the library frequently is a good idea.
HEEEYYY! I found some coins in the woods, but while trying to pick them up I get ensnared in a trap and killed by the owner.
  • Now you know it's there, you might want to disarm it. It's hidden well, but not completely invisible. More hints
    • If you look closely, you can see the rope disappearing into the grass.
How do I get that pumpkin from the merchant?
  • As you probably noticed when you first entered the town of Kolyma, the merchant's a bit greedy. More hints
    • He might be willing to leave his spot for a little while if there's anything valuable to get. Or at least something that appears valuable. More hints
      • Don't waste time dawdling. You wouldn't want to get caught stealing, after all.
The pumpkin's thirsty. What can I do to help?
  • There are multiple bodies of water to be found in Kolyma. But wouldn't you prefer to drink water where forest animals haven't been swimming in all day long? More hints
    • According to the mother, the pumpkins don't like sweet water. So find something to add a little flavour.
That little girl with the red cape lost her basket. Where is it?
  • She lost it while walking the countryside. That's where you should check.
That little duck in the pond looks unhappy.
  • He's just lonely. See if you can introduce him to others who seem to share his way of spending the day.
Can I catch the duck in the pond?
  • Yes, but not with your bare hands. Before you go fishing, you'd better get the proper equipment. More hints
    • Somebody lost his equipment. What would be the best fishing spot in Kolyma? Check there.

Obtaining the Birth Gem of Water
I want to buy something from the merchant in town, but I don't have any money.
  • The merchant will tell you he's willing to accept something else besides money. More hints
    • But it's not exactly something you're gonna find by searching the woods.
I've seen a mermaid on the beach, but she doesn't trust me.
  • Talking to her won't help either, because she doesn't understand your language. Maybe a little gift is in order to win her trust. More hints
    • There's no gift shop nearby, but definitely someone else who can help you with this matter.
How am I supposed to enter the lair of the Sharkees? The entrance is guarded.
  • Isn't it always in adventure games? Try finding an alternative entrance. More hints
    • Take a careful look at the fish in a certain part of the domain. It's not a graphic glitch, it's an indication to a secret entrance.
I found another entrance. But it's too dark to go in there.
  • Find something to illuminate the area. More hints
    • Or someone. More hints
      • You might need a container of some sort. More hints
        • Search the territory more thoroughly to find one.
How can I fill my container?
  • Take a look at what the glowing fish are doing. More hints
    • They won't enter your container unless there's something of interest in there.
How do I open the big shell at the end of the dark tunnel?
  • Pry it open. More hints
    • Use something that's as strong as a crowbar to do so.
I can't get past the Sharkees guarding the treasury.
  • Cause some diversion. More hints
    • Or let someone else do that for you.
How do I open the door of the treasury?
  • Do the same thing the king of the Sharkees was doing. More hints
    • Don't skip this one if you want to finish with full points.
The controls in that mini-game hardly work.
  • Don't hold down the cursor keys. Simply tap them to change directions. You can also click the mouse cursor on the place where you want to move. (left or right) Be careful for additional arrows appearing while Graham is moving towards the place where you clicked if you use this method.
How many rocks can I hit?
  • It depends. You can use the up and down arrow to speed up or slow down. Slowing down reduces the amount of rocks you can hit before the guards catch up, but dodging rocks will be easier. Speeding up will mean you can afford to hit more rocks without dying, but you'll have less time to get out of the way if one pops up in your path. The locations of the rocks are determined at random each time you play.
Whenever I leave the tunnel, the guards catch up with me. I can't face two guards at once.
  • The trident has the power to change the form of things. More hints
    • And it isn't limited to living things. More hints
      • Cut off the exit before they have the chance to appear and tear you to shreds.

Acquiring the Growth Gem of Air
Ummm...any clue on where to start?
  • The Door of Destiny and Neptune mentioned the second gem being in a high place. Maybe someone in town knows how to climb the mountain.
By the way, what's the deal with the thing in the haystack?
  • It has hay fever and is continuously sneezing. Maybe you can help it. More hints
    • What relieves when one has a running nose?
I still die whenever I try to enter Hagatha's cave.
  • The trap is triggered by the black bat above the entrance. Talk to Possum for a clue about bats. (if you haven't done so already) More hints
    • You have something that emits a blue light. Hold it up to the bat symbol. More hints
      • Okay, that clearly wasn't enough. Inspect the two skulls near the entrance closely. There seems to be something missing. More hints
        • If things don't fit well enough right away, use force.
I'm trying to get the cage, but it's chained to the wall.
  • Hagatha keeps the key somewhere around. Search the most interesting areas of the cave thoroughly.
OK, I unlocked the chain, but whenever I try to pick up the cage, the bird attracts Hagatha's attention.
  • Hagatha may be shortsighted, but she's not deaf. If you can prevent the bird from seeing you, it might not react to your presence.
After a while, Hagatha finishes her chant and suddenly notices me.
  • Well, then try to get the bird quickly. You don't have much time here.
Can I get that dome on the table across the room?
  • Not without being spotted. Ignore it for now, but keep it in mind.
Great. Now I have some stupid letter. What's that riddle supposed to mean?
  • The note mentioned the shopkeeper. She doesn't get out much, so whatever she has to hide won't be found on the other side of Kolyma. More hints
    • Inspect the shop more closely. See if there's anything that fits the description of the riddle.
Whenever I go back into the shop, Hagatha appears and "floorboards" me.
  • Stop wasting time, there's nothing you need in the store itself.
I'm on a mountain plateau, but there's a big snake blocking my path.
  • There's no flute around to charm the snake this time. It's not like that would have worked; snakes are deaf after all. What other things are commonly used to mesmerize someone? More hints
    • Some people favour a shiny watch tied to a string. More hints
      • You don't have a watch, but you have something else that's shiny.
I'm in the cave and I get killed by the inhabitant.
  • Don't waste too much time doing nothing. Take a look at the workbench and its contents.
How do I get that blue mineral the book is talking about?
  • One can be earned as a reward. More hints
    • The other is stashed away somewhere in Kolyma. More hints
      • If one of the two items was stolen, go and look for the other one.
Where can I find a yellow vegetable/plant?
  • One of the inhabitants of this land should have given you one as a meaning of thanks for a favour on your part.
Where can I get the white feather?
  • Once again, helping out on every occasion can nab you one of these.
Where can I find a clear crystal?
  • Some people keep looking for their glasses despite the fact that they're on their nose all the time. More hints
    • Or in their pockets. More hints
      • So take a good look at what you already have.
How can I light the brazier?
  • The brazier itself is made out of flint. Now if you only had steel or iron...
OK, I've created the magic emerald. Is there anything else I can do up here?
  • We know that the inhabitant of the cave enjoyed transforming his victims. More hints
    • Maybe one of his victims is still around. More hints
      • Who else is in the vicinity of the cave? More hints
        • You do know what the emerald can be used for, right?
Where can I find the bridle?
  • Check the cave for a clue.
What six stones? I don't see any of them around.
  • Try to recall the places where the inhabitant of the cave used to pop up. He was guarding the place where the bridle is hidden. More hints
    • One particular spot seems a little isolated from the others.
I found the six stones but still can't find the bridle.
  • The riddle on the cave wall gave you a clue what to do. Remove the spell. More hints
    • You might also want to keep the rest of the riddle in mind so you know which stone is the right one.
What answers should I pick during the ordeal in the clouds?
  • Your honour, compassion and loyalty are being tested here. Choose whatever you think is best. In order to get the gem, you'll need to earn 4 test points. Choosing the best option for a test gives you 2 test points, choosing the second-best option for a test gives you 1 and choosing one of the other options won't give you any points at all.

Romancing the Death Gem of Earth
I still keep getting lost in the swamp.
  • Don't go there yet. There some more places where you couldn't get in during the day. Check those out at first.
How do I attract the monk's attention?
  • He has nothing to say to tourists who are just sightseeing. More hints
    • He might be more open to a fellow believer or to someone who shows that he cares for the church.
Where is Possum? I can't seem to find her.
  • Explore other places first.
How can I get into the dwarf's home?
  • Judging from the smoke, the dwarf is definitely at home. See if you can get him to open the door. More hints
    • It's highly unlikely that he'll open the door with you standing right in front of it.
The dwarf catches me while I'm inside and kills me.
  • Once again, don't waste too much time if you know you're not invited. Get out of there as soon as possible. More hints
    • If it's too late for a getaway, make sure to remain out of sight.
Grandma doesn't take the soup for some reason.
  • Cold soup doesn't taste very good.
I guess it's really time to cross the swamp now. But how do I get through?
  • Remember what Possum said? A monk went into the swamp while writing things down in a book. Very likely the same book you found lying on the pew. More hints
    • The page that fell out of it might contain a clue. More hints
      • Take a careful look at the way the poem on the page is written.
The ferryman won't take me to the other side of the lake.
  • He's a ferryman. Not a charity institution.
I can't get through those poisonous thorns.
  • Do you recall someone telling you about the poisonous growth of the land? That remark was aimed at these thorns.
The ghosts near the door keep killing me.
  • Seeing clearly is a bit tough if your eye sockets are empty. More hints
    • Maybe you can fool them into thinking you're someone else.
How can I open the door to the castle?
  • The lock of the door has a fairly peculiar shape.
It's too dark to go down into the basement.
  • Make sure you have a source of light. More hints
    • You might have obtained one as a reward a little while back. More hints
      • If that's not the case, think about why some of the other rooms are not as dark as the basement.
Count Caldaur keeps killing me.
  • By now you should know a few things about the Count's past. Confronting him with it might buy you some time. More hints
    • If you can show him that his wife trusted you, he might do so as well.
Now I'm locked inside the castle.
  • The door isn't the only way out. More hints
    • See if you can find an emergency exit.
Where can I find this tiara?
  • Walk around the castle. There's a new inhabitant who can help you.
"Maws" keeps eating me.
  • Visit the room of your little sister, steal her books of fairy tales and her disks containing Mixed-Up Mother Goose.
How do I get past the ghosts in the graveyard?
  • Maybe you have an idea of who those ghosts are. Try to make clear to them what Anastasia asked you to do.
Whenever I dig somewhere, something drags me down.
  • The designers decided to populate each wrong grave with a man-eating zombie. More hints
    • The first and second, followed by double nothing symbolizes a number. More hints
      • See if you can find that number on one of the tombstones.
The werewolf is waiting for me inside Grandma's cottage. How do I get rid of him? Do I need to go here in the first place?
  • You can't defeat him here. If you found him in the cottage, it means you don't have the tools needed to defeat him yet. If you already have what it takes to take him out, the wolf won't show up here. Get out of there fast if he's waiting for you inside. While it's not polite to search other people's houses, we know Granny isn't coming back. It might pay off to search the cottage for something useful. (as long as the wolf isn't in there)
I get dragged down again when digging in the cemetery behind the church.
  • Once again, it means you're digging in the wrong spot. As you probably found out in the cemetery near the castle, two people died in the same period and their bodies were switched. More hints
    • The healer ended up in the lord's grave near the castle. Three guesses where the lord was laid to rest.
I'm killed by wolves as soon as I reach the crossroads.
  • Defend yourself. More hints
    • Or get out of there quickly. More hints
      • Or maybe you recently found something that's useful against wolves.
I'm cornered at the place where the ferryman used to be. Now what?
  • They say silver works well against wolves. More hints
    • But you'll need something to shoot your projectile with. Take a careful look around for something appropriate. More hints
      • Just silver may not be enough. You'll need to increase the potency too. More hints
        • Why is Graham cornered despite the fact that he can swim?

Meeting with the Maiden from the Mirror
Anything else for me to do here before going to the Door of Destiny?
  • Visit the town one last time.
I'm trapped on the bridge. I can't just give the gems to the dwarf, can I?
  • If he gets his hands on them, you'll never see them again. So make sure he can't reach them. More hints
    • Try to get them in a place where he can see them, but can't get them. His greed will do the rest. More hints
      • And make sure to keep those gems together. Tie them together with something.
The dwarf's no longer cutting, but I fall down while he's trying to figure out what to do.
  • Quickly making up his mind is not exactly one of the dwarf's strongest points. More hints
    • Looks like he'll need some help on this one.
I cut myself loose, but now I'm accompanying a part of the bridge on a one-way trip to the bottom of the chasm.
  • Find a more suitable place to hang around. quickly.
I'm changed into a baby or a skeleton while putting the gems into the indentations.
  • The Door of Destiny needs to learn about the natural order of life. More hints
    • And it seems like he's not the only one.
Ummm...which realm should I choose?
  • Now, let's see. Where was that girl imprisoned again? More hints
    • Aw...forget it. It's a big laugh if you make the wrong choice.
Now I'm stuck on the beach of the enchanted realm. I can't swim in that ocean.
  • You can't, but somebody else can. More hints
    • See if you can catch a ferry. (or something that can act like one) More hints
      • Refer to the annual book of general knowledge to find out what to do in situations where the ferry runs out of breath before you can put it back into the water.
I can't enter the tower and there's nothing else on this small island.
  • Yes, there is. Walk around the coastline of the island and take a good look around. Notice something odd?
Now I'm on the little island offshore, but what am I supposed to do here?
  • Keep your attention focussed on the on the ground for a little while longer.
There's plenty of water around, but I don't have a container anymore.
  • Doesn't the container in the picture remind you of something? More hints
    • Now where would you find such a thing?
How do I open the door of the tower?
  • Take a good look at the door. There are two objects that must be placed in there.
What's the combination to open the door?
  • Both lions give a riddle and each line of the riddle pertains to a certain symbol. (mountain, sun, water and air) More hints
    • One of the lions always lies and the other one does not. More hints
      • According to the liar, the lion speaking the truth won't know the answer. (makes sense, no?) More hints
        • If you get a message telling you that you haven't yet found a way to escape, inspect the island some more.
How do you get past the lion guarding the door?
  • How did you deal with animals before? The same approach might work again. More hints
    • Or maybe this one's not vicious, just hungry. More hints
      • Where did Hagatha obtain a lion from anyway?
At last! There she is. But I can't wake her up.
  • Her sleep is a magical one. But you know how to deal with situations like this, don't you?
There's not enough light here.
  • The furniture is not as useless as it may seem. More hints
    • If Graham feels the urge to investigate the tower some more, trust his intuition.
Help! Hagatha appears and zaps Valanice and me out of existence.
  • Remember Hagatha's little visit to the antique shop? She seems to be after something.
I guess Hagatha wasn't very pleasant while she was young either.
  • Refer to the annual book of general knowledge to find out how to improve magical potions and lotions.
Hagatha still gets even with me after a while.
  • Shed some more light on her new problem.
Isn't there some other way to deal with Hagatha?
  • Yes. Hagatha seems a bit allergic to certain animals. Abuse that knowledge at will.
Hagatha recovers after a while and kills us anyway.
  • She's standing rather close to the balcony. A little nudge might suffice. More hints
    • Use the web against the spider.
We're back in Hagatha's cave. Anything to do here?
  • With Hag out of the way, feel free to explore and investigate things you couldn't get to during your last visit.
