Game description
Ascii Patrol is a cross-platform side-scrolling arcade shooter inspired by Moon Patrol that uses very smoothly animated text-mode visuals. The player controls a moon buggy that can jump over obstacles and simultaneously shoots two guns, one straight ahead (to clear obstacles) and another vertically. The objective is to safely traverse a route, avoiding rocks and shooting down any UFOs that may appear.
Ascii Patrol is a free and open-source game, with the code available under the GNU GPL license. However, for some reason the author prohibits redistribution of the game "over public channels", so you'll need to download the DOS version from the game's homepage. Native versions for Windows and other platforms are also available.
