Game description

Barren Planet is a modern DOS turn-based strategy game with a sci-fi setting and stylised CGA/EGA graphics. Inspired by such classics as Battle Isle 2200, the boardgame Ogre and, to some extent, Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty, it casts the player as a military commander for one of two rival corporations, Nuvutech and Avuscorp, fighting over a barren but mineral-rich planet Dapra.

The included campaign, First Landing, comprises of a number of scenarios and can be played as either side against AI opponents of variable difficulty, between two users in hot-seat mode, and in a play-by-mail (PBM) mode. Each player commands a limited number of units that are controlled one by one, as in certain wargames. Once all orders have been issued, the player passes the turn to the opponent.

Units spend action points to move and attack, and may take advantage of certain terrain types. Everything is operated by keyboard only, with no mouse support. All commands are given by pressing and holding Ctrl, Space or Enter and then picking the appropriate menu option, while the arrow keys direct the selection cursor. By selecting a unit, friendly or hostile, or a terrain tile, you can gain information about it.

Later missions give the player the ability to repair units, and even build additional ones if enough resources are available. Not all scenarios require to eliminate all enemy forces, and in some you need to hold all victory points on the map by placing your units over them.

Barren Planet was released as freeware by the author, Damian Gareth Walker, who accepts donations (please visit his home site), should you wish to support this game and further projects. An official expansion campaign called The Polar Expedition was released soon after.
