Instruction/comment
Press Ctrl to select menu options and to fire the rifle in-game. Space bar thrown grenades if available. Alt makes the player jump forward, which may be used to storm fortifications.

Game description
Commando Enhanced is a frantic military-themed shooter that came about as an unofficial conversion of the game Commando from Commodore 64. The authors initially created a smaller 32 KiB version for a competition, and then enhanced it with additional features to increase playability, and also included music and sound effects.
The original Commando was released in 1985 for arcade machines and has a very simple premise of a US soldier single-handedly mowing down hordes of enemy troops, presumably during the Vietnam War (the game was unrelated to the film Commando starring Arnold Schwarzenegger that also came out in 1985). It was then ported to various home systems, and Commando Enhanced uses visuals mostly similar to the Commodore 64 version.
The player's objective is to kill as many enemies as possible while pushing forward towards the top of the screen. A level ends at the gate of an enemy stronghold, which will sortie the last wave of defenders before falling to the Commando. The player has unlimited ammo for the rifle, but only a small supply of grenades, which can be increased by picking ammo crates during play. Swarms of enemy soldiers, bazooka troopers, cannon emplacements and other threats stand in the way. You can also pick armour to increase chances of survival.
