Beats of Rage is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up game that pays homage to the classic Sega title, Streets of Rage. While not a direct remake, Beats of Rage uses mostly the same core playing mechanics, as well as a similar premise of three vigilante characters opposing a criminal syndicate in a corruption-ridden metropolis.
Beats of Rage may be played by one or two users at the same computer, and three playable characters are available, each with their own stats. All character sprites in the game come from the King of Fighters versus fighting series. In each stage, the player must follow a mostly linear path, defeating all opponents that appear on the screen. Certain game objects like trash cans or furniture can be broken to reveal useful items, including money and food that restores some of the player's health. At the end of a stage, players will face a boss that is tougher than the ordinary thugs found throughout the levels.
Beats of Rage was released as freeware, and later the developers also made the source code public, which laid the foundation of the OpenBOR project that powers many community-made beat-'em-ups. The game can be played natively in Windows using the OpenBOR engine (please see the links section below).
