Game description
Kaissa is a strong and versatile chess programme that was developed in the Soviet Union, originally for mainframes in the 1960s-1970s. In 1974, it won the international computer chess tournament that was held in Stockholm, Sweden.
This is a PC port of the original programme, with all its algorithms intact. It was a commercial product in the early 90s, but in mid-2000s, it was made available as a free download (source code included) with permission from authors.
Although Kaissa features only basic text-mode GUI (with modified fonts that include symbols for chess pieces), it offers a wide variety of options, including move analysis, difficulty levels of play for the computer opponent, save and load position, customized starting positions and so on. Version 1.10 works well in DOSBox and makes moves without significant delays most of the time.
