Game description

Mormels is a side-view puzzle/platform game that is clearly inspired by Lemmings, but some playing mechanics are different, making it somewhat closer to The Lost Vikings.

The player controls a group of Mormels, who appear to be a kind of fairy folk living in the woods. Unlike Lemmings who can take up any role according to the player's orders, each Mormel is a distinct character with a name and a unique special ability. Just like in The Lost Vikings, the player can control them directly, one at a time, and use their special abilities as needed.

The Mormels' team consists of the leader whom all others follow (by walking in the same direction), a gardener with a hoe who can dig a path through any obstacle, a builder of diagonal bridges who is nearly identical to that from Lemmings, a "stomper" who can dig vertical shafts, an explosives expert and a character who can activate touch plates by stepping on them. Their names are listed in the help section inside the game. Some levels only give the player certain Mormels but not others, some levels feature the entire crew.

Each level requires the player to safely navigate all Mormels to the exit before the time runs out. The puzzle lies in how exactly the player should go about this task, and some levels contain red herrings intended to distract the player from the right solution. There are three difficulty settings, with the harder ones giving the player less time to complete each level.

Mormels was originally released as shareware, split into three episodes. In the first, they must rescue the chief's daughter from an evil wizard, in the second, they set about to find a mummy's treasure, and in the third, they break into a closed amusement park to have some fun. The game was eventually declared freeware by the authors, but until 2025 it was only available in Dutch (although almost no knowledge of the language is required to play). An official English translation of the first episode is now available from the developers' current website.
