Game description
Kolumbus (also known as Exploration) is a turn-based managerial strategy / business simulation game set in the Age of Discovery. It is somewhat similar to Machiavelli the Prince in its basic premise, but offers more complexity.
The player starts off with a ship and some funds to hire a crew, buy provisions and goods to trade. From there on, you can explore the world as you see fit. The managerial part is very similar to other German business simulation titles from the era, namely the various menus are disguised as fully drawn and animated locations in the port town, such as the bank, the tavern and the wharf. Unlike Machiavelli, the game does not focus exclusively on trade, and shares some elements with another Age of Discovery-themed title, Conquest of the New World.
The playable demo of Kolumbus is only available in German, but the full version was also released in English as Exploration. Some knowledge of German is needed to play the demo, but the basic idea is that you must first outfit and crew your ship before you can sail. Note that you need to transfer funds from your office to the ship, which is done via the bank, before you can purchase goods and provisions. Orders to ships and other units are given through a menu on the main screen. Apart from sailing around, once you reach land you can deploy a civilian expedition made of the ship's crew members, or land military units if you have any on board.
